The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) mission is to provide patients with sufficient, safe, quality blood products and related medical services in a sustainable manner. SANBS operates across South Africa with the exclusion of the Western Cape, and supports its counterparts across the SADC region.

SANBS recently updated their branding and messaging and our challenge was to design their new website to showcase the assets and reflect the focus on engaging and celebrating donors. SANBS wished to have a unstructured design where columns were not apparent, so we used a flat design without borders or shading on a clean background to achieve a seamless page whilst still delivering a responsive website. website design features full screen imagery on the home page, whilst ensuring call to actions are available throughout so that users are led to deeper information and ultimately to visit the where to donate page and locate their nearest donor centre. The donor centre map is location-enabled to allow users to launch Google Maps on their device in order to get directions on the move.

In addition to reducing the main navigation on scroll, we specified reduced height banner images and expand/collapse sections on heavy content pages allow more space for volume of information on these pages, with a print-ready PDF button made available for users to print information for display at clinics or to read offline.

The navigation has been restructured to offer better user experience and and improve target pages for search engine optimisation. The website uses a custom WordPress content management system so that the client can easily update daily blood stock levels, news and donor centre information.

SANBS had the opportunity to launch their new website to coincide with the global campaign featuring Cristiano Ronaldo.
